You must “check in” with Riverside Adventure Company when you arrive. We will have a table and staff in Heron Cove A pavilion.
You can use a boat or fish from the shore…but you have to back to the Heron Cove A pavilion by 9:00 a.m.
Catch some fish and take a photo of your kids with the fish on the line, close to them (for size reference). Release.
Photos will be used to determine winners of categories. Any photos of the kid not wearing the same clothing, or time stamped with a date and time not congruent with the derby will not be considered. If you do this, we will disqualify you.
Our judges will determine our winners based on a review of the photos and their best judgment.

Chilli “not as Challenging” Biathlon
A mini version of the Chilli Challenge Triathlon to keep the faithful engaged.
Chilli “not as Challenging” Biathlon
A mini version of the Chilli Challenge Triathlon to keep the faithful engaged.
Read below and see if it’s for you. We realize that time is short, but we want to do this for those folks who always ask us, “Is the Chilli coming back?” We hope that with this “Chilli Lite” offering, we can potentially set the stage for a full recovery of the event in coming years.
We love “The Chilli” as much as everyone else who has been involved with it in the past. A tight timeline means there is no time for getting the road permits necessary for the road leg. If we get enough interest this year: that might help to get it up and running again next year.
And…if you want to ride your bike, we will be riding most of the old Chilli Course later that day as part of our Day at the Lake bike ride.
Fill out the form below if you have questions you would like to ask prior to registering for the event.
We are placing a cap of 100 participants on this event.
We will be doing timing without chips.
There is no Bike leg, so we will not be closing roads.
Marking routes will be less intense (so knowing the routes using maps will be beneficial).
T-shirts are for sale…not given away.
Kayaks will be available for rent. Use this webpage to reserve yours.
Awards will be limited…but fun.
We are doing this as part of our “Day at the Lake” event on 7/15/23.
It’s not the “Official” Chilli.
It’s not a Montour Area Recreation Commission (MARC) event…and we don’t want to pretend that it is.
We just want to get some energetic folks together at the Preserve for a fun day of paddling and running and pay tribute to the great fall tradition that was in our area (and that we hope will return.
Paddle - Once around the Lake, staying within 50’ of the shore. about 3 miles
Run - Once around the Lake, using the longer route. About 4.25 miles.
This is the run. About 4.25 miles of the most beautiful cross country.
The paddle is basically the same course, but in the water.
This is the big question. The Challenge of doing the whole thing yourself, or the fun of doing it with your friends? Well, we can’t decide this for you, but what we can do is tell you that we will recognize the top three finishers in both the Solo category (men and women) and the top three teams (however you decide to orient your teams). We will not be getting into 50 different awards for all kinds of orientations of teams. For that level of organization, you will have to wait for the 2024 version of the full Chilli Challenge. This is just for fun.
The start. Always LeMans…no matter how many folks we have. This time, a run to the boats instead of the bikes. That should be chaotic.
We will be using our iPad and a program called WebScorer. It’s not professional grade, but we think we can keep track of a group of folks pretty well using this system.
If you have a problem with your time after the race, bring me a beer, (off Preserve property) and we can talk about it.
Chill “not as Challenging” Biathlon will close at 100 entries (as few as 50 teams). We will rent boats first come/first served. Don’t delay!
Completely Unprofessional Corn Hole Tournament
Completely Unprofessional Corn Hole Tournament
Riverside Adventure Company will be offering and officiating a fun, completely unprofessional, single-elimination, Corn hole tournament as part of the “Day at the Lake” celebration on July 15th.
Boards may be level with each other…or not.
Boards will be of varied sizes (we are borrowing boards, so we get what we get).
Boards will be of varied materials (wood, plastic, rough, smooth, who knows?)
Bags will be of varied sizes, weights and materials.
Distances between boards will likely vary based on the limitations of the boards and bags.
Teams will be comprised of two humans.
Registration fees are for the "team”…not each individual
$25/team
50% of the overall registration fees will be used for prize money.
33%/33%/33% divided between women’s, mens, and coet teams.
We will monitor the popularity of this event, and likely close it if we get 50 teams for time purposes. We don’t want this thing running two days.
First place - 50%
Second Place - 35%
Third place - 15%
Overall registrations equal 40 teams @ $25/team = $1000. overall pot
Half that money is available for Prizes or $500.00
Divide that money by three to get how much is available for each category ( $500/3 = $166.66)
Each category then breaks out as follows:
50% of $166.66 = $83.33
35% of $166.66 = $58.33
15% of $166.66 = $24.99 (effectively: you get your money back)

Basics. How to hold the paddle. How to adjust a personal floatation device (pfd). How to adjust your boat. Some basic strokes. How to be safe. About 50% on land, and 50% on water.
In a beginner kayak paddling class, it is essential to cover a set of fundamental skills that will equip participants with the necessary knowledge and techniques for a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience. Firstly, basic paddle strokes should be introduced, such as the forward stroke, sweep stroke, and draw stroke, ensuring participants can efficiently maneuver and control their kayak. Secondly, an emphasis on proper body posture and balance is crucial to maintain stability and prevent capsizing. Skills like edging the kayak and bracing should be practiced to enhance balance and react to potential hazards. Additionally, participants should be educated on self-rescue techniques, including the importance of wearing a personal flotation device and proper wet exit procedures. Lastly, knowledge of basic navigation, understanding different water conditions, and weather awareness are vital to ensure beginners can make informed decisions and navigate safely on the water. By covering these skills in a beginner kayak paddling class, participants will gain a solid foundation for their kayaking journey.
Some more complex paddle strokes. How to increase your efficiency and endurance. How to read water (tough on the lake…but we will try to explain). How to get back into a boat.
In an intermediate level kayak paddling lesson, there are several key skills that should be included to enhance the proficiency and safety of the paddlers. Firstly, participants should learn advanced paddle strokes such as the forward sweep and reverse sweep strokes, which allow for sharper turns and maneuverability. Additionally, mastering the draw stroke enables paddlers to move parallel to the kayak, aiding in navigation in tight spaces. It is crucial to practice efficient bracing techniques to maintain balance and prevent capsizing in rough waters. Developing an understanding of self-rescue techniques, such as the Eskimo roll, empowers paddlers to regain control in the event of a capsize. Lastly, emphasis should be placed on developing solid navigation skills through the use of a compass and reading topographic maps. By incorporating these skills into the intermediate level kayak paddling lessons, participants will be equipped with the necessary expertise to handle a wider range of paddling environments with confidence and safety.
How to help others who are in trouble. How to roll (basics). How to fine tune your paddling game. How to empty a boat of water in water over your head.
In an expert level kayaking lesson, paddling and safety skills should be thoroughly covered to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. Participants will learn advanced paddling techniques, such as bracing, rolling, and edging, to enhance control and maneuverability in challenging conditions. Additionally, rescue techniques, such as the Eskimo roll and self-rescue methods, will be emphasized to equip paddlers with the ability to handle unexpected situations. Advanced navigation skills, including reading tides, currents, and weather patterns, will also be taught to promote efficient route planning and decision-making. Furthermore, participants will be educated on crucial safety practices, such as proper equipment usage, signaling techniques, and emergency response procedures, to foster a culture of preparedness and responsibility. By focusing on these paddling and safety skills, expert level kayakers will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and abilities to thrive in demanding environments while prioritizing their own well-being and that of their team.
Riverside Adventure Company started putting events together with Amy Houseknecht in 2022. We enjoyed each other’s energy and we both appreciated what the other brought to the table in regard to living your best life.
Last year, we did some pretty amazing events: from full moon paddles to sunrise paddles to Bonfires with Guitar music on the banks of the mighty Susquehanna. And the more we worked together, the bigger our group of “WooWoo people” became.
We got together and talked about deep subjects. People were real honest with each other but at the same time kind and constructive. The events we put together made it real easy to get to know other people…and maybe yourself a little better in the process.
Amy is a self-proclaimed “Surfer girl”. She has participated in different level athletic endeavors. She is an educator, and traveller. She brings a special energy to her passion of sharing her “best practices for life” with those who are open to exploration. We hope you enjoy her as much as we do.

Riverside Adventure Company started putting events together with Amy Houseknecht in 2022. Last year, we did some pretty amazing events: from full moon paddles to sunrise paddles to Bonfires with Guitar music on the banks of the mighty Susquehanna. in 2023, we have a pretty nice network of folks who want to continue our journey and we would like to extend an invitation to anyone else who might think this sounds like something beneficial and uplifting. Below, are some of the people involved:
We lovingly and affectionately have named it the Woo-woo Club, because…
We get it.
We are self-aware.
We think it’s funny too.
You see some folks stretching and breathing and playing drums and making spacey bowl sounds and talking about things like “gratitude” and you think to yourself, “Wow! Those folks are really OUT THERE!”
They all look pretty happy.
They seem to be enjoying themselves
They seem to be enjoying each other
They seem to laugh a lot
They seem pretty peaceful and fun
They either look healthy, or look like they care enough about themselves to want to be healthy…mind and body
And if you give it a chance…
If you can get over yourself and your pessimism and your jaded outlook and your inability to change…you might see something you like.
“Why do those people look lighter than me? Why do they seem to breathe easier and move through this life more easily than I do?”
