Heartbreak Ridge

This is a nasty bit of business that claims many victims into the cold Susquehanna River.  They all get up laughing.

The crossing & Mud

The route crosses Fishing Creek.  Sometimes this is just a little ankle-deep affair.  Sometimes is a waist deep affair.  Pot luck.

The crossing is immediately followed by a very muddy sloppy sections of woods and mush.  Good, dirty fun!

History

This might not be exciting to everyone, but this venue (Hess Field) was the very first Rail to Trail in the WORLD!  Yes, I said world.  Pretty cool, right?  And now you get to race here!

Part of the route you ride was originally a narrow gauge train line that brought raw materials like coal and iron ore to the foundries in Danville, PA.  Around 1890, the raw materials out that way had been exhausted.  This was around the same time in history that the BONESHAKER bicycle (named for it's ride on steel wheels) was all the rage in Europe.

The young industrialists of the time, bought some fancy, trendy, dangerous bicycles and began to ride them in Danville.  So of course, Danville immediately banned the brutish machines!

So, not to be denied, the young cycling industrialists, pulled up the train tracks on the exhausted rail line, and put down cinders, and sold badges to identify the members of their cycling club.  And that's how Danville got the first rail to trail, and maybe paid cycling club in the world!

Dark, fire & Ice

The race is called "Fire and Ice", because it's frozen, night, and everything is lit with fire...including the course.

Bring a light for your bike, or try to negotiate the ride by fire alone...that's your choice.  But know it's an unusual experience and one you won't soon forget!

Conditions will dictate the course.  This time of year, we have to take what nature gives us.  It's possible that we may even ride on some frozen Susquehanna River ice.

Whatever happens you'll be sure to have a great adventure and awards ceremony afterward.  Come prepared to hang around!

The Central PA Cyclocross Series is a fully supported, exciting, punishing way to participate in the most fun thing you can do on two wheels.

Riverside Adventure company has a theory about cyclocross:

It's supposed to be fun.

Sure, it's also competitive, but if you are the type of person who prefers Omega house to Delta house in the Animal House move, our cyclocross series might not be for you.  We want good, fun-loving participants who are looking of a legitimate challenge, but more importantly an experience with like-minded maniacs.

• If you do all three races: you get a T-shirt.
• If you do individual races: you get patches for each race.
• If you hang around, you get post race food, beverages and get to hang around and cheer for those who ride with bravery, and berate those who illustrate a less than warrior attitude.

What more could you want from a cyclocross race series?

River Towns Race Series

The Boneshaker is part of the River Towns Race Series this year.  As a result, racers will get "double duty" in regard to swag, points and love when participating in the Boneshaker.

Riders will receive points for River Towns awards based on the age categories at left.
